In honor of our nation's birthday, we feel that it is appropriate to feature a photo that captures the essence of patriotism and railroading. With America's bicentennial in 1976 came participation from railroads through creatively adorning locomotives and rolling stock in red, white, and blue (except for Kansas City Southern's locomotive). Railroads such as the Santa Fe and the Burlington Northern decorated several locomotives while Inland Steel and Norfolk & Western decorated rolling stock. Locomotives ranged from switchers such as the IHB's NW2 (1976) to six-axle road units like the J's SD38-2 (668).
Seen here is the Rock Island's contribution to America's bicentennial, E8A 652, heading south out of Chicago with the Bicentennial Rocket in June of 1976. The "Independence" could be seen hauling commuters in the Chicago area on weekdays and moving intermodal trailers on the weekends. The Rock's independence would last until its bankruptcy in 1980.

NWIRPS meetings are held on the first Thursday of each new month, taking place on the second floor in the history room at the Hammond Public Library, 564 E. State Street, Hammond Indiana, 46320. Unless otherwise noted, meetings begin at 6:30PM.
